Caring for a linen bag requires no special products or complicated routines. Cool washing, drying away from direct sun and storing in a dry place is all it takes for linen to age well – it becomes even softer over time and develops its own character.
Linen is one of the most durable textile materials – but only when cared for properly. A well-maintained linen bag can accompany you through years of daily shopping, travel and everyday life. Washed carelessly, it will fade, shrink or lose its shape sooner than it should. Here is everything you need to know.
Washing – how and at what temperature
You can wash a linen bag both by hand and in the washing machine. Both methods are safe as long as you follow a few simple rules.
Machine wash: select a delicate or natural fabrics programme, at a maximum of 40°C – ideally 30°C. Avoid high spin speeds, as wet linen is more prone to distortion. 800-1000 rpm is sufficient.
Hand wash: soak the bag in lukewarm water with a small amount of gentle detergent, then gently squeeze out the water – do not wring. This is the most gentle option, especially for the first wash.
One important note on detergent: choose products designed for natural or delicate fabrics. Avoid optical brighteners – they can alter the colour of linen, especially in natural beige or ecru shades. Robleia bags are made from thick Polish linen that handles regular washing very well, retaining its structure and colour over time.
Drying
After washing, take the bag out of the machine straight away – linen does not like sitting crumpled in the drum.
The best option is to hang it on a clothes hanger or lay it flat on a clean surface. A tumble dryer is not recommended – the high heat shrinks linen fibres and can distort the shape of the bag.
Also avoid drying wet linen in direct sunlight – natural colours may fade. Linen dries quickly, so a well-ventilated spot in the shade is all you need.
Creasing – is it a problem?
Linen creases. It is a natural characteristic of the fabric and part of its charm – the visible texture and soft wrinkles show that you are working with a real material, not a synthetic imitation.
If you do want to smooth the bag after washing, you can iron it. Set the iron to the “linen” setting and iron the fabric while it is slightly damp – wrinkles disappear most easily this way. You can also skip ironing entirely: simply hang the bag straight after washing and let it dry freely – most creases will fall out on their own.
Storage
Between uses, store the bag folded or hung in a dry, well-ventilated place. Linen does not cope well with prolonged moisture – mould can develop in damp conditions.
Avoid storing the bag in sealed plastic bags or closed boxes without airflow. A cotton storage bag or a regular shelf in a wardrobe is more than enough.
Stains – how to act quickly
The sooner you treat a stain, the easier it is to remove. Linen is a porous material, so dried stains are harder to lift.
For a fresh stain: press a clean cloth dampened with cold water gently onto the area – do not rub, as rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fibres.
For greasy stains: apply a small amount of washing-up liquid to the spot before washing, leave for a few minutes, then wash as usual.
Do not use bleach on coloured linen or linen in natural shades – the risk of permanent discolouration is too high. For stubborn stains, soaking in cold water with a gentle detergent for 30-40 minutes before washing tends to work best.
Robleia bags are made from thick Polish linen precisely because they are built to last – not for one season, but for years of everyday use. If you do not have one yet, visit the shop.
